Brett Kavanaugh = Mitch McConnell's finest moment? Here's an excerpt from the Sun Sentinel. Kavanaugh says he will 'not be intimidated into withdrawing'; McConnell pledges vote soon.
Excerpt: Denouncing his accusers for launching "smears, pure and simple," Brett Kavanaugh said Monday he'll continue fighting for Senate confirmation to the Supreme Court, even as Republicans battled to prevent a second woman's assertion of a long-ago sexual assault from derailing his nomination.
"I will not be intimidated into withdrawing from the process," Kavanaugh wrote in a letter to leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "The coordinated effort to destroy my good name will not drive me out."
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also condemned the allegations of sexual misconduct as a "shameful, shameful smear campaign" created by Democrats.
In a fiery speech from the Senate floor on Monday, McConnell said Democrats are using the allegations to delay and obstruct and "destroy a man's personal and professional life." He says it's an "orchestrated, last-minute hit on the nominee."
"Democrats won't let a complete lack of evidence get between them and a good smear. It's despicable," said McConnell, who said Kavanaugh will receive an up-or-down vote in the Senate "in the near future."
Bottom Line: Much of the time Mitch McConnell resembles everything that drives us crazy about Washington politics regardless of political party. He says lots of stuff, seemingly often lacking conviction as he talks in circles and very little gets accomplished. Every once and awhile he steps up to the plate and knocks one out of the park. Maybe it’s that he really does have another, get it done, gear in him or maybe it’s that he’s most convicted when it comes to the courts. As he’s assisted in confirming President Trump’s federal judicial nominees at a record pace, highlighted by the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
What he said yesterday on the floor of the Senate might be his finest moment. You know, the kind that Spartacus, was attempting when he decided he was Spartacus during the hearings. However, the vote goes down in the Senate, confirm or deny, it’s critical it comes to a vote and baseless slander doesn’t win the day. It’s not so much about the Democrat’s tactics of acting like spoiled children during the hearings, or even inviting in paid protesters to the hearings to support their rants. It’s the willingness to win by any means necessary including the willingness to slander and destroy an honorable man and usurp the will of the voters. Kudos to Kavanaugh for proving that he is a true patriot and thank you to Mitch for having the conviction most lack in Washington.
