The Remarkable Cameron Kasky

The Remarkable Cameron Kasky

Excerpt (Cameron to Fox News Radio): ā€œThis summer when March For Our Lives went on the summer tour that we embarked on I met that person in Texas who got that semi-automatic weapon because thatā€™s how they like to protect their family,ā€ Kasky told Fox. ā€œI met the 50-some-odd percent of women who are pro-life, even though I thought it was preposterous that a woman could be pro-life and not pro-choice at the time. I learned that a lot of our issues politically come from a lack of understanding of other perspectives and also the fact that so often young conservatives and young liberals will go into debate, like I said earlier, trying to beat the other one as oppose to come to an agreement... Iā€™m working on some efforts to encourage bipartisanship or at least discussion that is productive and help a lot of people avoid the mistakes that I made.ā€

Bottom Line: Iā€™ve often said that lifeā€™s greatest irony is that the more you learn and the more intelligent you become, the more you realize how little you know. Cameron Kasky appears to have already figured that out. Pretty impressive. Make no mistake, politically thereā€™s a good deal of distance between us but I suspect that Cameron will continue to learn and grow just as the rest of us hopefully are as well.

His story reminds me of a critical moment in my effort to harness analytical thought. It was when my debate coach challenged me to argue the opposite of my actual beliefs. It forced me to consider the other side as comprehensively as Iā€™d understood my actual position on issues. It didnā€™t change my core beliefs, those are with God, but it made me stronger as an analytical thinker and helped provide a path towards being open-minded with strong convictions. Iā€™ve found that my beliefs and my convictions became even stronger because Iā€™d truly vetted the alternative positions. Like for example my belief in God.

Iā€™ve studied every possibility, sought any explanation thatā€™d explain something other than a creator and guess what. There isnā€™t an answer. Atheism is a belief system no different than a belief in God but without any possible answers. That always upsets those without faith but itā€™s an indisputable statement. But thatā€™s part of the bigger point here. Back to Cameron.

In the interest of politics, many on the left latched onto these kids, full of emotion, short on life experience and vulnerable. They rode them, and continue to, as is convenient to attempt to exact political outcomes that they themselves often arenā€™t even able to vote for, let alone truly comprehend. Rather than being the coach that taught them to consider why there may be some that view issues differently, they preyed on them with myopic thought. Cameronā€™s figured it out, Iā€™m interested to speak with him and figure out exactly how & why. Hopefully, others will too. Because hereā€™s the thing, I pray for the atheists that loathe me when I talk about God because I want whatā€™s best for them. Just as Cameron has figured out that many women believe itā€™s a baby, not just a fetus in a womb.
