Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin is dead at the age of 76. The Grammy winning singer had reportedly been battling cancer. Her music spanned several genres, including gospel, jazz, soul, pop and R&B.
The Queen of Soul is most associated with Detroit, but Miami can claim a big role in Aretha Franklin's career. She recorded the 1970 hits 'Don't Play That Song' and 'Spirit in the Dark' at Criteria's studios on Northeast 149th Street. She also recorded 'Spanish Harlem' there for her 1971 greatest hits album, and she recorded the 1972 album 'Young, Gifted and Black' there as well. An observer to some of those sessions once told the Miami Herald Franklin was astounding.
