South Florida Recognizes World Breastfeeding Week

This week marks World Breastfeeding Week, and experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF agree that breastfeeding is the best way to provide newborns and infants with all of the essential nutrients they need.

As a result, the organizations are recommending that breastfeeding (or pumping and storing the milk), whenever possible, be the sole means of feeding youngsters up until at least six months of age.

World Breastfeeding Week runs from Aug 1-7.

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County will recognize World Breastfeeding Week, and the overall National Breastfeeding month, with its 7th Annual Breastfeeding Awareness Walk.

The walk will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Tropical Park in Miami.

Activities begin at 8 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m. An official "Big Latch On" event will take place concurrently, starting at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The event is co-sponsored by the Healthy Start Coalition in Miami-Dade County.

If you live in Broward County, you can participate in "The Global Big Latch On" event, Saturday, August 5th.  The public and breastfeeding mothers are invited to attend the event at Plantation's Central Park (Tots Pavilion) starting at 8 a.m.

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County says this year's theme is "Charting the Course Together," which focuses on using data to reinforce connections between breastfeeding and other health topics.

“I encourage health professionals, employers, families and communities to provide a “breastfeeding friendly” environment. Breastfeeding offers natural health benefits to both mother and child and provides ideal nutrition at no cost.”  said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director, Florida Department of Health in Broward County.

The department is encouraging breastfeeding friendly workplaces, hospitals and childcare facilities.
