Lawsuit Alleges Deputies Left Their Posts Before Airport Shooting

(Fort Lauderdale, FL)  --  A lawsuit says Broward County deputies were at a party and not at their posts during a deadly shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport last year.

Five people died and six others were injured when a man opened fire at the airport's baggage claim in January 2017.

Esteban Santiago pleaded guilty in the case.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of one of the victims, claims the deputies who should have been in the baggage claim were attending a retirement party at the time.  According to Local 10 News in Miami, multiple investigations into the shooting haven't uncovered any mention of a retirement party.  However, witnesses say there were no deputies in the immediate area when the shooting began.

The sheriff's office has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
