SoFla Man Seeks Bail While Appealing Homicide Conviction

A Riviera Beach man is expected in court Thursday to seek bond while his appeal is pending.

Rodney Chavers, 43, was convicted of manslaughter in April for the Nov. 13, 2015 shooting of 42-year-old Tarrie Wilder.

Two weeks ago, Chavers was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

He was previously unsuccessful in a “stand your ground” claim that he had the right to shoot Chavers because he believed his life was in danger.

Chavers has testified that he and Wilder got into a fight over $300 or $400. Chavers stold police that he was carrying a gun in his pocket. He claims that he fired his gun after Wilder grabbed it.

The victim’s mother said she prays the circuit judge rejects bond and sends Chavers to prison while he challenges his conviction and sentence.

Chavers’ lawyer argued for a lighter sentence, contending that Wilder was the initial aggressor because he punched Chavers before he was killed.
