Former South Florida Journalist Among Those Killed In Maryland

The editor of the "Capital Gazette" is being identified as one of five victims of a mass shooting in the Annapolis, Maryland newsroom.

Rob Hiaasen joined the Capital as an assistant editor in 2010 and wrote a Sunday column.  During the 1990's he was a reporter for the Palm Beach Post, where he crafted more than 500 stories.

His colleagues described him as a great mentor to young reporters.  Tom Marquardt, former editor and publisher of the Capital Gazette, said he was hired to add a more human dimension to the news coverage.

Hiaasen is also the brother to longtime Miami-Herald columnist Carl Hiaasen, who posted about his brother on Facebook....

Anne Arundel Deputy Police Chief Bill Krampf remarked that the suspect is in custody and is being interviewed, and there's no further known threat to the paper or the surrounding area.

Police haven't officially identified the gunman, but other reports indicate he's 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos. Social media accounts associated with him show a long history of disputes with the paper.

Ramos allegedly used a shotgun and smoke grenades in the attack.

The other victims are identified as Wendi Winters, Rebecca Smith, Gerald Fischman, and John McNamara.
