Sen. Nelson and Rep. Wasserman Schultz Denied Entry To Homestead Facility

UPDATE: 6/19 12:20p

Sen. Bill Nelson and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz denied entry into the Homestead detention facility were about 1,000 immigrant children are being housed.

Wasserman Schultz is also calling for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

“While some Trump Administration officials brag about their heartless new child separation policy, Secretary Nielsen has repeatedly denied its existence,” said Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz. “Lying to the American people about the cruel way our government is treating children at the border makes her unfit to lead. Secretary Nielsen must resign and be replaced by someone who understands that tearing young children away from their parents is fundamentally un-American.”

GOP House lawmakers and President Trump are scheduled to meet today to talk immigration as criticism grows over the administration's zero-tolerance policy at the border.

Sen. Ted Cruz introduced a measure last night that would keep families together as long as there's no aggravated criminal activity.

Sen. Bill Nelson is on his way to the Homestead detention center where it's believed many immigrant children have been taken.

He's set to tour the facility at noon today.

South Florida Rep. Lois Frankel is planning her own visit to the Texas-Mexico border.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is raising lots of questions after learning that migrant children who were separated from their families are being housed in South Florida.

Wasserman Schultz says she learned of the situation from immigration activists, and not through the administration or Department of Homeland Secuirty.

Wasserman Schultz will be part of a congressional delegation that will visit the Mexican border this week and tour the Texas facilities where children are being held.

When she returns, the South Florida Democrat says she wants to see the local facilities that are being used to house migrant children and review the policies that sent them here.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart is also sounding off on the topic saying, “It is totally unacceptable, for any reason, to purposely separate minor children from their parents. Any and every other option should be implemented in order to not separate minors from their parents, which I believe is unconscionable. We cannot allow for this to continue happening, and it must stop. I continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that the provision included in this week's immigration bill puts an end to this cruel practice.”
