Educators Concerned Gov. Scott Investing Pension Funds In Firearm Companies

Update: 6/14 3:00 p.m.

Broward Teachers Union members are concerned their pensions are resting on the state investing in firearms manufacturing companies.

The Broward Teachers Union will hold a press conference Thursday on Governor Rick Scott's refusal to stop investing pension funds in firearms manufacturing companies.

The BTU says the governor and his appointed managing trustees of the Florida Retirement System pension plan, that covers all state, local, school district and public university employees, held an Investment Advisory Council meeting Monday and failed once again to adequately address the risks involved in investing teacher retirement fund contributions in three firearm manufacturing companies.  The union says one of the those companies manufactured the AR-15 rifle use by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter.

The BTU will be joined by Stoneman Douglas teachers, students and state legislators Thursday afternoon at their headquarters in Tamarac for a press conference.
