For over a year the state of Florida did not do background checks on people who were applying for concealed carry firearms permits.
An inspector general's report sent to Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in 2017 highlighted the problem. It said an employee stopped doing the checks because she couldn't log into the database.
Putnam is running to be the Republican nominee for Governor. He has pushed to make it easier for people to get a concealed weapons permit.
A Putnam spokesman says that the employee responsible for the problem had been fired. In a statement, Putnam says that after they discovered the employee's negligence, they immediately completed background checks on the affected 365 applications. That resulted in 291 revocations. They also implemented safeguars to make sure this never happens again.
Florida has more than 1.9 million people licensed to carry concealed weapons.
