Oriental Fruit Flies Found In South Miami-Dade

After finding three male Oriental fruit flies in South Miami-Dade, the Florida Agriculture Commission is issuing a warning but no quarantine at this time.

The first fly was spotted during routine trapping.The discovery promoted expanded trapping activities which resulted in the discovery of two more.

“We successfully eradicated this invasive pest, protecting Florida’s $120 billion agriculture industry, three years ago, and together with the U.S. Department of Agriculture we’ll implement an aggressive eradication program to do so again,” said Agriculture Commissioner Adam H. Putnam. 

The last time an Oriental fruit fly was found in South Florida was in August of 2015.

State and federal officials monitor more than 56,000 fruit fly traps statewide.
