Broward Commissioners Approve Putting Penny Tax On November Ballot

Broward residents will get another chance to weigh in on footing the bill to improve transportation.

Voters in November will cast ballots on whether they're willing to pay an additional penny per dollar in sales tax in order to make commuting easier.

Before voting 6-1 in favor of the referendum, Broward commissioners discussed, with so many communities opposed to having rail service in their backyards, the tax period be reduced from 30 years, but Commissioner Nan Rich disagreed.

Broward officials announce 16 cities and nearly 600 projects have been identified as wanting a share of the funds that would be collected if residents agree to the penny tax.

Knowing there are so many needs, Commissioner Dale Holness says everyone needs to do homework before heading to the polls.

It's believed the penny tax would raise more than $350-million a year.

Voters rejected a similar proposal back in 2016.
