Hialeah Police Search For Man Who Ran Botched Veterinary Practice

Police in Hialeah are searching for a man who they say ran an illegal veterinary practice.

Investigators say a man reported that he had brought his 12-year-old bulldog to Jose Alvarez-Marrero in April and paid Alvarez-Marrero $250 to neuter the dog.

The dog reportedly had complications including seizures, and eventually died. Investigators say the death was triggered by an unsterile surgery.

Investigators searched Alvarez-Marrero's apartment Wednesday.

They say they found a makeshift operating room and several dogs and cats.

Police arrested Alvarez-Marrero's girlfriend, Sophia Gonzalez, as an alleged assailant. She faces a third-degree felony charge of animal cruelty and practicing veterinary medicine without a license.

Alvarez-Marrero was not home when police visited his apartment. Investigators say he is still on the loose.

Anyone with information about Alvarez-Marrero's whereabouts is asked to contact the Hialeah Police Department at 305-687-2525 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
