Trump Cancels June 12 Summit With Kim Jong Un

President Donald Trump has officially called off the planned, June 12th summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

In a letter from Trump to Kim Jong Un, the president says, "sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.

"If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write," the letter continues. "This missed opportunity is a truly sad moment in history."

Trump and Kim's summit would have been the the first meeting between a sitting US President and North Korean leader.

The summit hit a number of speed bumps recently as both sides began trading barbs and taking tougher positions. On Tuesday, Trump met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the White House for consultations and suggested the summit could be delayed or even called off entirely.

On Thursyday, North Korean Choe Son Hui, a vice minister of foreign affairs, was quoted slamming "ignorant" and "stupid" comments made by "political dummy" Mike Pence made in an interview that compared the nuclear-capable North to Libya.

"We will neither beg the U.S. for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us," Son Hui was quoted as saying. "Whether the U.S. will meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown is entirely dependent upon the decision and behavior of the United States."
