Environmental Group Wants Chemicals Used In Sunscreen Banned

Summer is fast approaching, and normally, you'd want to pack your sunscreen in your beach bag. But an environmental group is asking the federal government to ban chemicals that are used in the strongest sunscreens.

The Center for Biological Diversity is petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to ban oxy-benzone and octin-oxate.... two chemicals that are believed to bleach and kill coral.

Earlier this month, lawmakers in Hawaii instituted the ban to protect their coral reefs.

About 70-percent of sunscreens contain the chemicals, especially the sunscreens with an SPF over 50.

The FDA is still studying the issue.
