Westfield Boward Mall Sears Location To Close Its Doors This Summer

At the Westfield Broward mall, Sears will close its doors this summer after 40 years at that location.

Business Insider reports that the location off University Drive and Broward Boulevard will be among at least 40 Sears stores across 24 states that will close in either July or August.

In total, Sears has gone from 1,980 stores five years ago to under 900 as of April.

Owners of Sears also are reportedly selling 16 locations during an online auction, as well as reportedly closing 10 stores from co-owned Kmart.

A spokesman for the company says that some employees would be eligible for severance packages or to move to open positons at other stores.

Sears was one of the three anchor stores when Broward Mall opened in 1978 and, at one point, was the biggest store at over 209,000 square feet.

Plans were made to reduce that size this year to make room for restaurants and other stores.
