University of Miami Hosts Conference on Opioid Epidemic

The University of Miami is taking on the opioid crisis in Miami-Dade County.  Monday they're holding an all-day conference on the opioid epidemic with at least 200 doctors and healthcare workers.

"Experts from many different sectors get to speak with each other and learn about all the opportunities that exist to bring treatment to our community," said Dr. Jose Szapocznik, a UM top public health expert.

The idea is to integrate effective drug treatments into different medical settings, like internal medicine and HIV clinics, where patients are seen on a frequent basis.

"This provides opioid users with an opportunity to have a drug-free existence and turn their lives around," said Dr. Szapocznik.

Experts from South Florida and around the country are taking part in panel discussions and sharing best practices.
