FPL Parent Company Looks To Expand, Acquire Companies To Its Portfolio

The parent company of the Sunshine State's largest electrical utility company, Florida Power & Light, wants to add Gulf Power to its portfolio.

NextEra Energy has agreed to a $6.5 billion dollar deal with Southern Company of Atlanta.

Along with Gulf Power, which serves about a half-million customers in Northwest Florida, it would also obtain Florida City Gas.

It has 110,000 customers in Miami-Dade, St. Lucie, Indian River and Brevard counties.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Federal Trade Commission must approve the deal.
