Hispanic Bone Marrow Donors Needed

"Be the Match" donor registry is making a plea for Hispanic bone marrow donors through a new initiative called My People, My Family, Mi Sangre.

The donations can help patients with blood cancer and other deadly diseases.

"With bone marrow transplants we need to match people based on their tissue types, the antigens that are on the surface of their cells, and we inherit those from our parents.  So that means that we tend to match people that have the exact same background as others," said Mary Halet, Be the Match, Director of Community Engagement.

Nearly half of Hispanic patients are struggling to find a matching blood stem cell donor.
