Two Parents Of MSD Shooting Victims Are Running For Broward School Board

The parents of two Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting victims are running for seats on the Broward School Board.

Lori Alhadeff and Ryan Petty filed official paperwork on Tuesday. Both parents lost their daughters, Alyssa Alhadeff and Alaina Petty, respectively, in the Feb. 14 shooting.

Alhadeff is running for the District 4 seat – which includes Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School – against incumbent Abby Freedman.

Petty will run for a countywide seat against incumbent Donna Korn.

Alhadeff is a former school teacher while Petty works in telecommunications and was recently one of three parents appointed to a state board investigating the MSDHS shooting.

The two parents said they hope to make sure a tragedy like this doesn’t happen again, and students like accused shooter Nikolas Cruz don’t fall through the cracks in the school system.

Both parents are supported by a group called Concerned Citizens of Broward County.

The elections will take place in November.
