Ann Scott Kicks Off Summer Literacy Adventure, Encourages Students To Read

Most school kids across the Sunshine State are counting the days until summer vacation, but Florida's first lady is asking them to take a few moments to spend some of their free time reading.

Ann Scott is hosting her eighth annual "Summer Literacy Adventure."

Students can sign at a web site run by the Florida Department of Education and the school whose students read the most books will receive a prize plus a visit from Mrs. Scott.

"With summer fast approaching, we want to encourage schools, students and parents to prepare for the summer break by participating in this fun reading adventure," the website states. "First Lady Ann Scott has pledged to read this summer, and you can too. Please join us in the Summer Literacy Adventure by pledging to read this summer. Fill out your name and number of books you pledge to read..."

Each student can fill out their own pledge, here.

Research has shown that kids who stop reading through the summer can lose a month or more of progress they made during the school year.
