South Florida Cities Among Most Dangerous In The U.S.

Two South Florida communities have been named among the top 10 most dangerous in the United States, according to a new report by the National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS).

In total, 11 cities throughout the Sunshine State made the top 100, including four in Miami-Dade and three in Palm Beach counties.

Miami-Dade's Opa-locka was named the #3 most dangerous cities in the U.S., coming in just behind East St. Louis, Illinois, and Darby Borough, Pennsylvania. According to the report, Opa Locka experiences an average of 2,807 violent crimes per every 100,000 people. 

Florida City clocked in right behind Opa Locka, at #4, with an average of 2,551 violent crimes per every 100,000 people, according to NCHSS.

Other Florida communities to grace the list (top 100) include: 

  • Cocoa (#11)
  • Belle Glade (#17)
  • Lake City (#37)
  • Homestead (#41)
  • Riviera Beach (#51)
  • Daytona Beach (#72)
  • Lake Worth (#85)
  • Miami (#94)
  • Fort Pierce (#95)

The most dangerous city in the U.S. according to NCHSS is East St. Louis, Illinois, with 4,888 violent crimes per every 100,000 people.

NCHSS compiled the list using the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting database and crime reports from 2010-2014, the most recent years available. The database is restricted to agencies that serve at least 10,000 people.
