Miami Officer Suspected Of Smuggling Contraband Into Prison Flees From Cops

A Miami corrections officer led police on a wild chase Thursday after being accused of smuggling contraband into the prison that she worked at, police said.

Officer Evelyn Bruton was later taken into custody.

who works at Everglades Correctional Institution on Southwest 187th Avenue, was taken into custody, Florida Department of Corrections officials said.

Officials said Everglades Correctional Institution, located at Southwest 187th Avenue, was conducting an inspection checkpoint in response to evidence that indicated Bruton was smuggling contraband. When staff approached her car to perform a K-9 inspection, she fled, still in her uniform, and refused to stop, officials said.

Miami-Dade Police were able to take her into custody after a pursuit that ended in the area of Southwest 152nd Street and the Florida's Turnpike, officials said. It's unknown what exact charges she'll face.

Officials didn't say what the contraband items were but Miami-Dade Police said their narcotics bureau detectives were on the scene.

The department of corrections released a statement calling Bruton's actions "unacceptable."
