5-Year-Old Okeechobee County Boy Credited With Saving Mom's Life

A 5-year-old boy in Okeechobee County has been named a 'junior deputy' after saving his mother's life.

On April 9th, Anthony Mathieu discovered his mom, Heather Dewberry, unresponsive on the floor of their kitchen.

“It was terrible,” said 5-year-old Anthony. “She fell down in the kitchen when I was playing, watching a movie in my room.”

He used his mom’s cellphone to call his dad at work multiple times until he reached him. He also called his grandparents and kept an eye on his younger brother and sister who were also home at the time.

Anthony's father immediately called 911 and began driving home.

Sheriff's deputies also arrived on scene and transported Dewberry to the hospital, where she made a full recovery.

On Thursday, the Okeechobee Sheriff's Office honored Anthony as junior deputy, presenting him a plaque for the Just Us Citation Youth Recognition Award.

The sheriff also gifted the family a $100 gift card to Walmart.

"It was really cool!" said Anthony.

As for Dewberry, she has experienced similar spells before, but doctors were unable to pinpoint what caused her to become unresponsive. Authorities say she is OK and stable for now.
