Red Tide Algal Bloom Causes Dead Fish, Beachgoer Problems In SW Florida

Ut oh... be on the lookout if you head to the beach in Southwest Florida.

Beachgoers in SWFL are encountering dead fish and dealing with respiratory issues.

That's the result of a red tide algae bloom stretching from Charlotte County south and up to Collier County.

Areas affected include:

  • Gasparilla Beach
  • Sanibel Island
  • Bonita Beach
  • Vanderbilt Beach
  • Barefoot Beach

The red tide conditions are expected to hang around through midweek.

Doctors say anyone with breathing issues should avoid beaches with a red tide warning.

For more information, Florida Fish and Wildlife issues a weekly Red Tide Status Report.
