Fort Lauderdale Officials Push To End War Memorial Gun Shows

The War Memorial Auditorium gun show in Fort Lauderdale is expected to be done away with by year’s end, city officials said Tuesday.

Florida Gun Shows Inc. will be allowed to hold five more shows at the city-owned auditorium that stands in Holiday Park, at 800 NE Eighth St.

When the company’s license agreement with the city expires in November, officials do not intend to allow the gun shows to continue, commissioners said.

The gun shows have drawn opposition for years, but the outcry grew louder after the Feb. 14 shooting of 34 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

Seventeen people died in the shooting, and the gun show became a campaign issue in Fort Lauderdale.

Cities in Florida aren't allowed to regulate gun sales, but because the city owns the auditorium, it can conceivably end the shows.
