At Least 17 Dead, Suspect Identified Following Parkland High Shooting

At least 17 people are reported dead following a shooting at a South Florida high school.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School  on Pine Island Road was under lockdown Wednesday afternoon as police rushed to the scene.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Nicolas Cruz, had "at one time" attended the school but was no longer enrolled, according to authorities.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said Cruz had been expelled due to disciplinary problems. He allegedly used multiple magazines on an AR-15 rifle to kill 17 people:

  • 12 victims inside the school
  • 2 victims outside the school
  • 1 victim on the street
  • 2 died in the hospital

Authorities say the victims include both students and adults.

Cruz was taken into custody without incident off campus, Israel said. A motive for the shooting is currently unknown and is being investigated.

During the incident, students could be seen running outside of the school. Some of them had their hands in the air and others were walking out with their hands on each other's shoulders.

It appeared that students were dropping their backpacks in the middle of the street as they were being guided to safety. A crowd of students could be seen sitting on the grass next to the road.

Following the evacuation, students were being kept safe at a nearby Marriot Hotel in Coral Springs

WIOD will be carrying a live, one-hour special on the latest coverage of the incident at 7 p.m. EST. Listen live here.
