FL Justices Are Questioning Red Light Cams... Again

Florida's highest court is tackling the legality of red light cameras... again.

Florida Supreme Court justices are considering a case out of Aventura. Luis Jimenez sued the city after receiving a traffic citation based on footage reviewed by a third-party vendor. But he does not dispute that he turned right on red, ignoring a sign prohibiting the turn.

Still, his attorney, Stephen Rosenthal, argues it's unfair that about 3,000 cases a month are not even reviewed by officers because they're discarded by the camera's third-party operator.

Attorney's for Aventura and the state's Solicitor General defend the word "review" saying officers have access to all documented events.

The case came before the high court after the Third District Court of Appeal ruled the program was constitutional because police officers were reviewing the record before deciding to issue a citation, and not just rubber-stamping the private company’s decision
