Weston Student Withdraws From College After Social Media Racial Slur

A Weston native has withdrawn from college after being kicked off the school's soccer team for making a racial slur on social media.

Georgia State University suspended freshmen 18-year-old Natalia Martinez from the team days after she used one of her Instagram accounts to make the slur.

The school acknowledged and announced the suspension via its own social media account on Jan. 20.

Following the announcement, Facebook user and Georgia State student India Bridgeforth began a petition to expel Martinez, which gained 793 signatures.

“I have just started a petition for the [expulsion] of a student at Georgia State University. Our mission statement states that we provide an outstanding education and exceptional support for students from all backgrounds and these Panther values are not concurrent with the very distributing statements made publicly by the GSU freshman and soccer player,” Bridgeforth posted.

Martinez, a graduate of Cypress Bay High School in Weston, has since apologized for the remarks.

“The truth is, I could give you excuses ... but what you need to know is what’s in my heart,” said Martinez.
