Suspect At Large After Fatally Shooting Ex-Girlfriend's Mother, Taking Kids

Fort Lauderdale police are searching for a man they say fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's mother in front of his children on Tuesday evening.

Police said the victim, Bernice Jefferson, was shot multiple times in a domestic dispute just before 7:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of Northwest 11th Place.

Relatives said Jefferson's daughter, Letraveya Jefferson, had broken up with the suspect, who she shares three children with, and he showed up at her home Tuesday night.

Letraveya said her mother was in the kitchen cooking dinner and washing baby bottles when her ex-boyfriend came in and shot her from behind.

Relatives said the suspect's children were sitting at the kitchen table doing homework when the shooting occurred. They said the suspect threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend if she tried to help her mother.

The suspect then allegedly took his children and dropped them off at his mother's home.

An official with the Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department said Bernice Jefferson was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where she later died of her injuries.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released by police, remains at large.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
