Tuesday marks the first anniversary of two Orlando-area law enforcement officers being killed during the manhunt for an accused double-murderer.
On Jan. 9, 2017, Markeith Loyd allegedly shot and killed Orlando Police Lieutenant Debra Clayton outside of a Pine Hills Walmart. Clayton was pursuing Loyd, as he was wanted for the December 2016 murder of a pregnant woman.
Loyd fled the scene, sparking a man hunt and frantic pursuit. That's when Orange County Deputy First Class Norman Lewis was killed in a motorcycle crash while searching for Loyd.
Several events will take place throughout Orlando on Tuesday to honor the two fallen officers, including a memorial motorcycle ride and a church private service.
"We never forget our heroes and today is a day for the entire community to reflect on the great work they did," Orlando Police Chief John Mina in an interview with Fox 35.
