Police Say Man Burglarized Numerous Cars On The UM Campus

A South Florida man is accused of multiple vehicle burglaries that have taken place at the University of Miami/

According to an arrest report, 39-year-old Oscar Saavedra Cortes was arrested Thursday and faces multiple grand theft and burglary charges.

Authorities say Cortes is responsible for four burglaries on the Coral Gables campus between March and December.

According to the report, Cortes was seen on surveillance footage entering an unlocked car at the UM parking lot in the 5500 block of San Amaro Drive back on Dec. 4. He was able to get into the trunk, where he stole a backpack containing a $1,700 laptop and a $200 textbook, the report said.

Coral Gables police officers were allegedly able to register the license plate on the car Cortes fled in.

Police say Cortes also stole a $1,300 laptop and wallet from a car in the same parking lot on Nov. 29. He also stole a wallet, cash, credit cards and sunglasses from a Mercedes in the parking lot at 1241 Dickinson Drive on March 16, the report said.

Cortes was booked into jail where he remained Friday under an immigration hold, records showed.
