Thousands Of Keys Residents Without A Home For The Holidays

Although it's been over three months since Hurricane Irma stormed through the Florida Keys, the island chain is still suffering.

In parts of the lower Keys, little has changed since the storm hit on Sept. 10.

About 1,200 homes on the island chain and many of them cannot be rebuilt.

Furthermore, many of the people who live(d) in the area lost their jobs because the hotels and restaurants they work for are still rebuilding. So with little other option for living and making a living … some have decided to leave the Keys for the holidays.

Commissioner George Neugent, Monroe County: “We are already losing a lot of people. I think we will lose 15 to 20 percent of our population before [the rebuilding] is over.”

The holidays are hard for people dealing with loss. And in the Keys, reminders of what Irma took are everywhere.
