Florida lawmakers want federal aid to help house the 225,000 Puerto Ricans who have arrived in Florida since their home was devastated by Hurricane Maria.
U.S. Rep. Darren Soto released a bipartisan letter Wednesday to Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosello and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requesting an expansion of the federal Direct Lease program or a six-month extension of the Temporary Sheltering Assistance.
Many evacuees who aren't living with family or friends are living temporarily in hotels paid for with FEMA vouchers.
That program is scheduled to expire January 15th.
Since Oct. 3, more than 200,000 people have arrived in Florida from Puerto Rico.
