UPDATE: Suspect Identified Following Explosion At Port Authority

UPDATE 12-11-2017

A suspect has been identified in the Port Authority explosion incident Monday Morning. Police say 27-year-old Akayed Ullah was found with a pipe bomb strapped to his chest.

Police say three people sustained minor injuries. The suspect sustained serious injuries. A total of four people have been injured as a result of the incident.

Officials in New York City briefed the public just before 10 a.m. Monday:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A man had a pipe bomb strapped to him when it went off on a New York City subway platform in Port Authority Monday morning.

The explosion took place near 42nd Street and 8th Avenue around 7:30 a.m.

The suspect, described as a Bangladeshi man from Brooklyn in his 20s, was arrested and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two other people on the platform sustained non-life-threatening injuries; a total of three have been injured.

There is now at least a two hour delay for New York City commuters attempting to get into the Lincoln Tunnel. Port Authority, a busy commuter hub, has been shut down completely at this time.

It just so happens there's a police precinct two blocks away from the Port Authority, so very quickly police were on scene, and they said relatively few injuries -- even they seemed surprised by that.

The cause of the explosion is not yet clear.
