Listen: How To Avoid The Holiday Sniffles & Sickness

As the holiday parties kick into high gear, everything should be merry and bright -- that is, of course, unless you get sidelined with a sore throat, runny nose, or something worse.

Memorial Urgent Care Pembroke Pines' Dr. Marc Shapiro says the best way to avoid getting sick is to get the flu shot - not flu mist - because the mist form isn't effective this year.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the antibodies to develop in your body, so get a shot right away. It's also easy to check this off your to-do list, too — you can get a flu shot at most major pharmacies.

Also, you should wash your hands with soap and water frequently. If you lather up and scrub for at least 20 seconds, you can remove germs from your hands before they enter your body.

No sink around? Hand sanitizer is better than nothing.

Germs can’t enter your body until you touch your mouth, eyes, or nose. So try to break yourself of touching your face so much.

If you do get something more than the common cold, get to a doctor quickly.
