Florida Highway Patrol troopers have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash in the Florida Keys.
Troopers said Kevin O'Connor was driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck when he struck and killed Nehama Rena Monzioch, 43, around 11:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the 26.5 mile marker of the Overseas Highway.
She was riding her bicycle home from work at Boondock’s Restaurant on Ramrod Key when she was killed.
Troopers said the force of the crash was so great that Monzioch's bike was split in two.
Monroe County sheriff's deputies discovered her body about an hour after crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Just two months prior her life was spared by two men when the building she was in collapsed during Hurricane Irma.
According to troopers, an employee at the Looe Key Tiki Bar in Ramrod Key spoke with O'Connor following the crash. O'Connor allegedly admitted he was drunk but said he "didn't hit any people." When the employee went to call 911, O'Connor sped off, troopers said.
Troopers said they received an anonymous tip Nov. 27, which led them to O'Connor. When troopers interviewed O'Connor Friday, they said he told them that he did not remember leaving the bar, only waking up at home the next day.
O'Connor is currently being held on $50,000 bond at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office jail on Stock Island.
He faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
