A first of its kind school could be coming to Broward County.
On Tuesday evening, the school board heard about plans to open a high school just for the most gifted students.
The Center for Intellectually Talented Youth would be the first high school solely for gifted students. It would replicate an existing gifted and talented program housed at Parkway Middle, but would add grades nine through 12 (to host grades three through 12).
Students have been able to attend the program at Parkway for more than a decade. They take classes in a separate building from others and they progress based on their skill level, regardless of age or grade.
About 200 students are enrolled this year.
While some parents like the idea of the new Center for Intellectually Talented Youth, others told the school board it would lead to a form of segregation.
Exactly what a second program would look like has yet to be determined, but it could become reality as soon as next year.
