Broward Schools File Lawsuit Against New Charter Schools Law

Broward County Schools filed a lawsuit Monday challenging rules signed into law in House Bill 7069.

Broward school officials claim that some of the provisions in the new law disregard the mandate of the Florida Constitution to protect public education.

A media release says the law allows corporate charter schools to use property taxes to build and renovate their own facilities -- something Broward County is against.

The lawsuit also opposes a portion in the law that "allows a charter school to open without the locally elected district school board having authority to ensure that it is efficient, safe, secure or of high quality for its students," the release said.

The lawsuit goes on to list funding under Title I and entering into a mandated contract with charter school operators as items they oppose.

Twelve additional school districts joined in the lawsuit and are petitioning for an immediate review.
