Carlos Curbelo Wants To See Reform In The Nation's Bail System

A South Florida congressman is leading a fight to reform the nation's bail system.

Republican Carlos Curbelo has teamed up with California Democrat Ted Lieu to unveil the Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act.

It would give the states $10 million over the course of three years to replace bail with pretrial assessments.

“The Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act encourages states to replace their existing bail systems with pretrial risk assessments — a more just system for evaluating the flight and safety risk of defendants facing trial,” Curbelo’s office noted.

“An individualized risk assessment considers factors such as a person’s past criminal history and the current charge.”

Curbelo believes bail discriminates against poorer defendants.
