These College Majors Have The Highest Unemployment Rate

Career site Zippia used U.S. Census data to calculate the unemployment rate for people ages 22 to 25 in various fields, and found out which college majors had the highest rate of unemployment.

Unsurprisingly, many of them involved arts, society and communication, but there were also some that related to science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) fields.

So, here's what you need to know. These are the majors that produce the highest unemployment rates:

  • Composition and rhetoric: 17.54 percent
  • Environmental Science: 11.79 percent
  • Anthropology and Archaeology:11.76 percent
  • Drama And Theater Arts: 11.42 percent
  • Film, Video, and Photographic Arts: 11.24 percent
  • Mass Media: 10.92 percent
  • Fine Arts: 10.90 percent
  • Area Ethnic and Civilization Studies: 10.84 percent
  • Intercultural and International Studies: 9.93 percent
  • Communication Technologies: 9.40 percent
  • Biology: 8.76 percent

Three of the 11 majors on the list can be considered part of STEM. The data may help explain why so many students study science and math in school but don't go on to get jobs in those fields...

Oftentimes, they don't exist.
