Miami-Dade May Change School Calender After Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma caused Miami-Dade County Public Schools to close for seven days in September.  Wednesday the Miami-Dade School Board will vote on making up the days.  They may use two teacher planning days and three early release days to make up the school days lost.

Here's the five dates that would be converted to regular school days for the 2017-2018 School Calendar.

  • January 19, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day);
  • February 15, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day);
  • April 19, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day);
  • April 20, 2018 (previously a teacher planning day); and
  • May 17, 2018 (previously a secondary early release day)

The District says even with the loss of seven school days, they still exceed the minimum instructional hours required by the state.  However, officials say the loss of instructional time has impacted student learning, which is why the school board is considering the proposed changes to the calendar.
