Cutting The Cord: Television In The Modern Age

The slow and steady transition of once-traditional premium television viewers to, most commonly, streaming users, has been a decade-long developing phenomenon.

In an age where Millennials are now entering adulthood... it's no longer terribly accurate to say that people are throwing away their cable cords and switching to streaming devices.

And that's because, if you never had the cord in your home - you're not cutting it.

From the Pew Research Center here's how we're currently watching TV:

Source: Pew Research

It's safe to say that:

  • About 5 percent of those 65+ have "cut the cord"
  • 10 percent of those 50-64 have done the same
  • Likewise for 37 percent of those 30-49

However, for the adults under 30, by a 2:1 margin, never even had the cord to begin with.

That paints a much clearer picture of what's really going on and how rapidly streaming is pacing towards becoming the prominent way people watch TV.

If you never had the cord to begin with, it's not cord cutting. It's just what your accustomed to (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, yadda, yadda).
