A Florida inmate is dead after authorities say he leaped from a moving bus as he was being returned to the prison he was evacuated from ahead of Hurricane Irma.
A Florida Highway Patrol spokesman says 23-year-old Camilo Quintero jumped from an emergency exit window of a bus as it traveled on Florida's Turnpike Monday.
He landed in the roadway and was taken to Delray Beach Medical Center where he died Tuesday.
Quintero was a patient at a maximum security mental health clinic. He had been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial for murder in January.
An arrest affidavit says Quintero stabbed and beat a roommate to death while living at Kenlands Walk Condo in December 2015.
At the time of his death, Quintero was being taken back to the South Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center in Florida City.
