Broward County To Open 14 Emergency Shelters

As of 12 p.m. Thursday, Broward County will open the doors of 14 community shelters, including a pet-friendly shelter that is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Below is a list of all shelters located in Broward County. It should be noted that not all shelters may be open during a state of emergency. 

In the event of an evacuation order, monitor news reports or call the Broward County Emergency Hotline, 311 or 954-831-4000, for specific shelter openings.

Thos  located in low lying areas or beside tidal bodies of water should seek shelter elsewhere if conditions warrant. 

All mobile home residents must evacuate in Plan A (distinguished in red in the image above, areas east of Intercoastal Waterway) and Plan B (distinguished in yellow in the image above, areas east of U.S. 1 at Federal Highway). In addition, mobile home residents may be ordered to evacuate if tropical storm conditions warrant. 

For pet owners: 

Service animals are permitted in General Population Shelters so long as the pet meets the requirements under Federal law. Visit ADA Requirements for Service Animals for additional information. 

Additionally, a pet-friendly shelter operated by Broward County and the Broward County Humane Society is available. Pets staying at the shelter must be accompanied by their owners, but pets and owners will be housed in different buildings at adjacent facilities. 

Advance, in-person registration is recommended, but not required. Call the Humane Society at 954-989-3977 or visit their offices at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale.
