City of Miami Beach Considers Beachside Building For Disabled

The City of Miami Beach considers a beachside building for the disabled.

Sabrina Cohen, founder of The Sabrina Cohen Foundation, says the structure would make it easier for people with disabilities to access the ocean.  She says it would serve as a permanent place to store bulky equipment needed to make beach days possible.

"When you're down with an injury or condition, to see other thriving and smiling and getting an opportunity to be out is priceless," said Cohen.

The proposal is being met with harsh criticism.  Opponents say the facility will limit the right of the general public to use the beach, which Cohen says isn't true.

"At the end of the day, it's become a civil rights movement.  This is our right and I'm just one person standing up and speaking for a huge community.  We're fighting for what's right," said Cohen.

Cohen says if approved her foundation will have three years to raise the money needed to construct the building.

A key vote for the proposed plan is scheduled for 3 p.m. during a Miami Beach Commission meeting Wednesday.
