Raquel Ragalado Announces Run For Congress CD 27

Former Miami-Dade school board mayor Raquel Regalado has filed her paperwork to run in the Republican primary.

Regalado hopes to replace the seat being vacated by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Congress.

She’ll face Bruno Barreiro, who has already announced his campaign.

An attorney and single mother of two autistic daughters, 42-year-old Regalado has a history of crossing party lines. She backed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink in 2010 over Republican Rick Scott, then endorsed Scott in his 2014 re-election grid. And in 2016, she challenged Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, a fellow Republican. Gimenez won, (56-44 percent).

Raquel is also the daughter of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.

"I'm running for Congress because we cannot afford to live in South Florida," Regalado said in a video posted on her Facebook page. "Because before we get to any other issue, we need better-paying jobs. We can't afford to buy a home. We can't afford to live here. We can't afford to raise our children here, let alone hope that one they and their children will call South Florida home."

Regalado announced in May she planned to throw her hat in the Congressional race. By filing the official paperwork, Regalado can now begin fundraising for the seat.
