Khayden Saint Sauveur, a toddler from Delray Beach, died Saturday after his family found him sitting in the back seat of his father’s car on a day that the temperature reached 90 degrees.
Authorities say Khayden's family had been searching for the toddler when they found him in the backseat of his father’s small BMW outside the family’s home in the 5000 block of Northwest Fifth Street in the Rainberry Woods neighborhood. His family didn’t know how long he had been there.
Fire rescue took the toddler to Bethesda Hospital, but staffers there were unable to revive him, Delray Beach police say. Detectives said Saturday that the toddler may have been in the hot car for hours before the family knew.
Authorities say the investigation into Khayden’s death is ongoing, but it looks like a tragic accident.
The toddler would have been 2-years-old next week.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, heatstroke is the leading cause of vehicular non-crash-related deaths for children under 14. The administration says 661 children died as a result of vehicle heatstroke between 1998 and 2015.
