A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy is under arrest after officials say he falsified time sheets to collect money for time he did not work.

Deputy William Schlegelmilch, 44, was arrested Wednesday and faces charges of grand theft and falsifying public documents, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Schlegelmilch was hired in July 2008 as the school resource officer at Key Largo School but had worked for the sheriff's office from August 2002 until November 2006.

Investigators discovered that between March 2015 and April 2017, Schlegelmilch recorded more work time on his electronic time sheets than he actually worked over more than 20 times.

The extra amounted to $3,073 in pay. Schlegelmilch's salary at the time was $57,889 per year.

Officials say Schlegelmilch was booked into jail Wednesday morning and suspended without pay pending his termination.
