A Boynton Beach man is facing charges after he was found unconscious Friday following a car crash with a 10-month-old child in the back seat, and bath salts in the car.

Joseph Leonard Ferrugia II, 38, is facing charges of DUI, child neglect and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

Authorities say Ferrugia was driving a Jeep that rear-ended a Ford sedan near the Wal-Mart Supercenter on 10th Avenue North east of Congress Avenue. The driver of the Ford allegedly says he found Ferrugia unconscious and appearing to be under the influence.

Ferrugia seemed unaware that the baby was in the rear seat, the driver told police.

Fire rescue personnel told police that Ferrugia was unconscious when they arrived at the scene and needed a sternum rub to wake him. Police also say a small amount of MDPV, a bath salt derivative with amphetamine effects, was found on the front passenger seat inside a plastic bag.

A family friend picked up the baby and the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified.

Ferrugia has a long arrest record in Palm Beach County, court records show. He has been released from the Palm Beach County Jail after posting a $5,000 bond.
